Robust Economic Development Team to Strengthen Aviation Industry

April 5, 2017

(San Juan) – Following the recent operational restructuring of American Airlines and Norwegian Air, the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) Secretary, Manuel Laboy Rivera, ensured that he, together with the Tourism Company Executive Director, José Izquierdo, is exploring new alternatives for the economic renewal of this sector.

“We are working as a team, taking specific steps to ensure the growth of our tourism industry, one of the strengths contributing to our economic development. We want to expand Puerto Rico’s wide variety of air routes and alternatives”.

The results of these efforts were evidenced by the announcement made today by Copa Airlines, which will add a third flight between San Juan and Panama for the peak summer season.

“This initiative is an additional sign of Puerto Rico’s value as a tourist destination. We look forward to welcoming the thousands of Central and South American brothers and sisters who will visit us over the coming months as a result of this increase in flight frequency, and we thank Copa Airlines for continuing to rely on Puerto Rico, as they have done for the past 25 years”, Izquierdo said.

The DDEC Secretary added that for strengthening this industry and continuing to expand air routes “an Act has been signed that creates the ‘Destination Marketing Organization’, one of our strategies to attract the attention of new airlines”.

Recently, Frontier Airlines announced that it will make direct flights to San Juan from Orlando and Philadelphia International Airports, operations estimated in $20 million with 110,000 visitors annually. Finally, Iberia has launched direct flights between Puerto Rico and Spain earlier this year.
